With spring coming on quickly and an upcoming general election we can expect to get more than the usual number of solicitors.
What can we do as an Association and as homeowners to prevent solicitation?
Many solicitors will drop a name of someone in the community stating they are their friend or are doing some work for them. Most of the time they are not truthful in that representation.
Fauquier County requires those soliciting door to door obtain a permit and carry it with them to show to any resident upon request.
Those selling farm fresh vegetables, newspapers, representing political party candidates, education, religious and charitable organizations are not considered solicitors. They are not required to have the county permit.
Our “No Soliciting” signs at the entranceway to our community are not entirely enforceable because our streets are not private. It is the homeowners right to refuse or permit solicitors on their property. A “No Soliciting” sign placed on your property is enforceable. It is the homeowner’s individual right to refuse or permit solicitors on their property. If your property has the sign posted or if you tell them you are not interested and they continue with their speech, tell them they are now trespassing and if they do not leave you will call the Sheriff’s Department. Call the non-emergency number (540-347-3300). We have been very successful in the Sheriff Department supporting our community in this matter and the Sheriff’s Department will escort them off the property
